At a time when government science reports have been edited to accommodate political views and independent science advisory boards have had respected scientists dropped only to be replaced with industry representatives, the importance of having vital and valid scientific information as part of public discourse has never been greater. "It is the role of scientists to share the best possible information, so society can make decisions that are informed by the most recent, current and accurate information available," Dr. Lubchenco said.
Our editors recently sat down to talk with Dr. Lubchenco about the social responsibility of scientists at large as well as her own mission to connect the dots for everyday people "who are hungry for information" on environmental problems, from red tides and beach safety to coral reef bleaching and global warming.
