Bush Administration Set to Gut Endangered Species Act
(posted:11/24/03, 11:45:41 AM)
Your letters are urgently needed before December 10, 2003 to stop the FWS from rolling back the clock on endangered species protection.
Capitulating to intense lobbying efforts by the zoo, circus, and trophy hunting industries, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) is attempting to significantly weaken the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The FWS is soliciting comments on its proposed regulatory change pertaining to permits issued pursuant to the enhancement of the survival of the species exemption. These proposed changes would essentially allow zoos and circuses to buy exotic endangered species, such as Asian elephants, by simply claiming that the money spent to purchase the animals would be used for "conservation" efforts. The FWS proposal can be read at http://frwebgate4.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/waisgate.cgi?WAISdocID=73805725391+19+0+0&WAISaction=retrieve.
Please note that the link states that comments are due November 10, 2003; however, there has been an extension of the comment period until December 10, 2003.
